Michael Hennessy is a PhD student at the University of Limerick. His current research focuses on new single photon sources created by engineering monolayer-thick semiconductors on the atomic scale.

He received his BSc in Applied Physics from the University of Limerick in 2016. His final year project was entitled The Design And Construction Of A Low Temperature Photoluminescence System. During his undergraduate, he also completed a research internship at the Holst Centre in Eindhoven, Netherlands. There, he worked towards optimising and simplifying the process of Laser Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) of silver pastes for use as adhesives for microelectronics.

Michael’s research work currently concentrates on developing ultra low-energy implantation as a method of controllable modification of TMDs on an atomic scale. This is achieved by analysing single photon emission from these materials using TEM, HAADF and EELS. These implanted TMDs will then be incorporated into non-classical LEDs for use in quantum information processing and quantum metrology.
